Centaurea

All about my big boat…

recent progress

The latest fun project on the boat has been making up a set of composite spreader sockets for the mast. Fiberglass mast, fiberglass sockets! First try molding such a complex shape (and making two the same!), and i’m really pleased with the results. When i have a bit more time, i’m hoping to set up some more Centaurea-specific pages for those interesting in following the work.

It’s all about making plywood survive… The recent projects on Centaurea have been the main sliding hatch, hatch “garage”, and cockpit sole. i finally managed to get some decent-quality plywood for these bits, and work is coming along on them nicely. The plywood i bought is for the hatch top and “garage” top, the four cockpit locker tops/seats, and the cockpit sole piece. Ech of these three applications requirees a little different approach and treatment of the material. First off, a few notes on plywood…

two weeks

Dropped the boys off at the airport this morning, after a couple weeks of fun. Mixed in with all the usual debauchery were a couple sailing days with ’em aboard our yard playboat, an Impulse 21, including the obligatory trip to the Willie T.
The boys really tore into the baot too; Chris wanted a project, so i had him fair my bottom repairs… he went on to sand and fair everything below the sheerline. Whoa… looks like i’ll be painting the topsides after all! Cory and i got thje remaining bits of hardware off and sanded the decks. Rebuilt the winches, rebuilt the forepeak doors, filled the old unused deckfills, chipped and Ospho-ed the iron keel, and started in on removing the window frames.
My next step is a healthy coat of primer to cover up everything, and better show what, if any, further fairing needs to be done. i intend to paint with Interlux Perfection, so i’ve picked up a few quarts of Interlux 404/414 epoxy primer.

i totally forgot to add some good news about my boom… The biggest boat on our dock has all her spars out for fairing and painting, and the painting sub-contractor mentioned that he’d be happy to fit my (comparatively small) spars in for free! “There’s always paint enough left over on these big jobs.”, he says… Well, i couldn’t get my mast out and faired in time, but now my boom looks great with two fresh coats of Awlgrip paint!
